Take Back Your Voice: Stand Up for Public Schools

While public schools are struggling with leaky roofs and huge class sizes, the Stelmach government is pouring millions of dollars into exclusive private schools. They’re raising private school funding an extra 17%, and on top of that, the government will now, for the first time, also cover 70% of the cost of private school infrastructure. That’s a huge bonus for private schools, a move that will increase the number of private schools in our province and draw more resources away from the public system.

Harry Chase, Shadow Education Minister and a former teacher with 34 years experience, knows that’s unfair. “There’s no justification for this when there is so much need in the public system.” Public schools are overcrowded, and the government is shutting down neighbourhood schools while neglecting others that have needed repairs for years.

Parents are fuming. Why should the government subsidize those who send their children to private schools, when their kids often have to resort to bake sales for essentials like textbooks and photocopier paper?
